Ahoy!

Welcome to the twenty ninth post in the series “VR Sailors - MarineVerse Community” – introducing sailors in MarineVerse Sailing Club.

Redshank sailing in MarineVerse Globe near the Port of Heysham

Today, we are chatting with Mark, known online as Redshank.

In virtual reality, you can meet Mark as Redshank. He sails his cruiser Redshank in MarineVerse Globe, which is part of the MarineVerse Sailing Club app.

We asked Mark a few questions.

What is your sailing experience?

I do not have any sailing experience.

What is your favourite sailing memory?

As a child, I was once invited to join our neighbours on a day trip in a small open sailing boat, which I enjoyed very much.

Tell us something about your experience with MarineVerse Sailing Club. Any good memories or highlights?

Some years ago, I discovered MarineVerse Cup—now called MarineVerse Sailing Club—after buying all sorts of games for my newly acquired Quest 2.

I am not a gamer, and I soon got bored with most of the games on my Quest. MarineVerse Sailing Club was the exception.

It felt very special to be able to learn some basic sailing skills and take part in the dinghy races.

When I heard about MarineVerse Globe, I immediately bought a Quest 3, and I have been enjoying it ever since. In fact, it is the only game I use on my Quest 3.

I especially like the live weather conditions, changing currents, and light signals from buoys and lighthouses.

For instance, it is a fantastic challenge to tack through the English Channel with strong, unfavourable winds and currents. There is an enormous variety of waves and light beacons in the Channel.

I find the overall rendering of clouds and the ocean very satisfying, especially considering the limitations of the Quest 3.

Who should try MarineVerse Sailing Club, and why?

I think MarineVerse Sailing Club will appeal to anyone with even the slightest interest in sailing. It is a great way to learn basic sailing skills.

Any tips for those new to sailing who want to race in MarineVerse?

I am not a great racer myself, but I have noticed that my sailing improves noticeably when I sail more often.

Anything else you’d like to share?

MarineVerse Globe is a great tool for learning to navigate with a paper chart, plotter, and dividers.

A halo-style head strap is much more comfortable. Removing the facial interface also allows you to peek underneath the VR headset at a chart while keeping an eye on the boat.
